SCHOOL LIFE

The Wellow National School was built by the Church and opened in 1843, enlarged in 1881 and the Infant's Department added in 1893 (but the stone above a door celebrating 1852 is a mystery to me).

SL1   Obviously, this is the class of 1913. The headmaster who appears in this, and several of the other photographs, is Mr Lowe. I have not yet been able identify the exact spot where this was taken, but perhaps today's pupils could locate it from the pattern of brickwork. Some of the pupils appear in several of these photographs.

SL8   This is of Shoscombe school in 1913. The School Church of St Julian's at Shoscombe was built by Rev George Horton. His son added the Infant's Department in 1894 and enlarged it in 1911. The school is in St Julian's Road, Shoscombe Vale and was, until 1926, within the parish of Wellow. These fine lattice windows have since disappeared.
