MILL HILL

MH1   This idyllic scene could have been painted by Constable. The packhorse bridge at the bottom of Mill Hill must have seen the troops gather in 'Philips Norton Lane' for the engagement between the Duke of Monmouth and Earl of Faversham during the Monmouth Rebellion. As well as the obvious addition of a concrete walkway where the cattle once drank, the railings over the bridge have now been replaced by a stone wall.

MH2   This is Mill Hill before the days of tarmac.

MH3   It is interesting to see that the same trees appear in all these pictures of the ford.

MH4   This is the mill stream in flood.

MH5   This is the Hales-Lavell family outside The Hollies at the bottom of Mill Hill. The same porches (or maybe their successors) are still there.

MH6   This is David Hartley outside The Maltings (shown as 'Malthouse' on the 1886 village map). According to Matthew Watts, David left his mark by carving his initials outside the kitchen door!
